Codenames is a fast-paced team word game that combines communication, deduction, vocabulary, and creative thinking.
Players divide into two teams, with each team choosing a Spymaster. A grid of 25 word cards is placed on the table, but only the Spymasters know which words represent their team’s secret agents.
On each turn, the Spymaster gives their team one word and one number as a clue. The word connects several possible codenames, while the number tells teammates how many words may relate to that clue.
Players must discuss the possibilities and carefully choose their answers. Correct guesses reveal their team’s agents, but choosing an innocent bystander ends the turn, choosing an opponent’s agent helps the other team, and revealing the assassin means an instant loss.
With hundreds of different words and changing layouts, every game creates completely new clues and combinations. It is a fun choice for family game nights, parties, gatherings, and groups who enjoy word and strategy games.
